Spring in the Gorge With Kids: Go-To Weekend Routine

Spring in the Columbia River Gorge feels like a reset. Everything is green again, the waterfalls are showing off, and you can actually get outside with kids.

This is our go-to weekend rhythm lately, nothing fancy, just realistic, doable, and honestly one of the reasons I love raising my son here.

The Weekend Reset: Bikes + Fresh Air

If you have kids with even a tiny bit of energy (so… all of them), the bike spots around here are gold.

  • The Golden Eagle pump track in Hood River is one of our go-tos. It’s contained, easy to keep an eye on everyone, and somehow keeps them entertained way longer than it should. There’s even a strider track for little kids and progressive lines as they get more confident.

  • And then there’s Post Canyon, specifically the Family Man area (this is key if you’re a parent). It’s basically a skills park built for all levels, with small loops, rollers, and features that are actually doable for beginners.

What I love is that it grows with your kids. You can start super mellow, and over time they build confidence without it feeling intimidating.

Golf, But Make It Kid-Friendly

This might sound ambitious with kids but there are actually some really fun, low-pressure golf options around here that feel more like an outing than a full commitment.

  • Skamania Lodge Golf
This is hands-down the most family-friendly golf setup in the Gorge. It’s not your typical long, intense course, it’s a shorter par-3 style course designed to be more relaxed and approachable, which is exactly what you want with kids.

They also have an 18-hole putting course (Little Eagle) that’s perfect for younger kids

  • Hood River Golf Course
This one feels a little more “classic golf,” but still approachable if you keep expectations low. Think: wide open space, letting kids ride along in the cart, maybe hitting a few balls and calling it a win.

It’s less about playing a full round and more about exposure, getting them outside, trying something new, and honestly just being together in a really pretty setting.

Rainy Day Pivot (because… spring in the Gorge)

Let’s be honest, spring in the Columbia River Gorge is not always giving sunshine.

When the weather flips we pivot.

A couple of our go-to rainy day options:

  • Chalk School of Movement - This place is a lifesaver. Tumble, Jump, Flip. Chalk is more than just a play space, it’s a full-on movement gym for kids. It’s a huge, open indoor space with gymnastics equipment, trampolines, parkour-style setups, and plenty of room for kids to climb, jump, and just move their bodies.

  • Western Antique Aeroplane & Automobile Museum (WAAAM) - This one surprises people, but kids love it. There’s so much space to walk around, tons to look at, and it feels like an outing without being stressful. WAAAM has one of the largest collections of still-flying antique aeroplanes and still-driving antique automobiles in the country.

  • Columbia Gorge Museum - Tucked into the heart of the Gorge, the Columbia Gorge Museum is one of those easy, unexpectedly great stops with kids. Inside, you’ll find everything from massive logging equipment and vintage airplanes to Native American history and a full-size fish wheel, basically, lots of big, visually interesting exhibits that keep little ones engaged without needing to read every sign. It’s not overly interactive, but there’s plenty of space to wander, explore, and let curiosity lead the way.

  • Hood River Pool- This is one of those places that works no matter the weather.

    It’s super family-friendly with:

    • A shallow/kid area

    • Open swim times that are easy to drop into

It’s not fancy, but that’s kind of the point.

This is part of Gorge life too, learning how to roll with the weather instead of fighting it.
